Honeycomb city



I've just had a trip down to see my parents, while I was down there I popped over to see my Grandparents too. I've been badgering them for a while now to get up into their loft to make sure some of the books and photographs they've got up there get looked after. I managed to drag down a few boxes worth of old family photographs and some writings (the earliest of which date back to the 1890's). The cataloguing and recording of all the stuff up there is going to be a huge project in its own right and it's something me and my father have only just started working on and you should defiantly check out chippy1402.co.uk for more pictures like these....



However, it was in the middle of dragging these boxes down that my granddad starts talking to me about doing a little bit of design work for a small project he's always wanted to do. Based on the idea of a honeycomb or beehive being one of the most efficient methods of building would it be possible to mock him up a hexagonally designed floating city. Sure thing I say without thinking it through at all, the idea of building and modelling something would be a great help to me at the moment and creatively and artistically it's defiantly something fun to do. The problem being that each hex is almost a completely contained unit which needs designing, planning and thinking through. This thing could take me months if not more to complete.

I'm going to give it ago though and I think the best way to start it by working out what this "city" needs in broad hexes, so hexes (hex’s?) for housing, for farming, for power generation etc.. then design and model each part of each hex separately (design the houses, the schools & hospitals) then do the layout for each hex by dropping in the models and finally (probably some months later) join each hex together to complete the city. So I'm off to buy myself some pencils and some coffee...this could be a long journey.
